Writing and publishing a book feels like the endpoint of an enormous amount of work (it is), a goal achieved.

But it’s also a portal, an opening, a starting point. A door with a world of possibilities on the other side.

The question most authors don’t ask themselves explicitly enough (or early enough, but now is just fine) is: What do you want on the other side of that door?

Not vaguely. Not “success” or “impact” or “to make money.” Specifically. Because the author who wants to establish authority in her field builds a different business than the author who wants to leave a legacy, or the one who wants to develop a cottage industry, or the one who wants to springboard into speaking, or the one who simply wants to share a story before it’s lost.

All are legitimate. But all are different. So all require different resources, strategies, and priorities.
