First, I noticed what worked for authors I worked with over the years and saw how it could apply to my own business. I kept observing, kept applying, kept exploring, kept testing.

Basically, I know the advice in my new book, The Profitable Author: 1,001 Ways to Build a Business Around Your Books, works for growing a sustainable, income-generating, flexible, multi-faceted creative business…because I have and have had such a business.

But for my book, I especially want to test Do 5 Things a Day with the commitment, spirit, and prioritization it deserves. It does work to build momentum and I’m using my 5 things a day to focus solely on book promotion rather than more general author and business promotion.

Below is my first month’s worth of 5 things a day, with some things I’ve noted first:

  1. I started this one month before my book release date, but I could’ve started this level of commitment 3–4 months ahead of time.
  2. I focus on incrementalism in many places…getting the website done, handling website SEO, filling out the dang…
