Do five things a day, every day to promote your books. It was one of the first mantras of book promotion I heard in my first years as a publisher, learning the business from publishers of all sizes and stripes on the 800-member pub-forum internet discussion list in the mid-1990s. And I’m not sure I’ve heard or seen anything simpler, as flexible and customizable, and effective since.

After 25+ years in the indie book publishing world, it remains the number one piece of advice I’d recommend to any author. And I have recommended it…to probably tens of thousands of authors through my public programs, virtual webinars, countless articles. And to dozens of clients. Sometimes I wonder if more than 100 authors have ever taken it seriously — have given it a real go. I hear from authors almost daily now about how they just can’t do it, can’t make the time, can’t think of the things. Even dedicated, hardworking authors who are somewhat successful and could be more so.

But I’m not giving up because I know the cumulative power of this habit, and I have several new articles planned from different angles to convince you…
