July’s the Slowest Month of the Book Publishing Year…

Making it the perfect month for mid-year evaluations and strategic planning

July happens to be slowest month of the year in publishing — FYI February is a close second — by which I mean slowest in terms of book sales, book reviews, media mentions, making contact with anyone in the NYC publishing world. Basically, it’s historically the slowest month for authors and publishers to make tangible progress on classic measures of publishing success.

But, that doesn’t mean it’s not just the right month to make progress in other important areas for an author business and publishing life, namely it’s a great month for writing, for research, for vacation, for relationship-building, and for what I cover below: mid-year assessments and engage in strategic planning for the second half of the year.

Combining mid-year evaluations with strategic planning for the final months of the year is a great opportunity and powerful combination for authors to reflect on your progress, check in with any business goals you have for this calendar year, and adjust your strategies as needed for the second half of the year.
