Jay Conrad Levinson built an empire teaching soloproneurs and small businesses how to compete with corporate budgets using time, energy, and imagination instead of money. His guerrilla marketing principles — unconventional tactics, maximum impact, minimal cost — were revolutionary in 1984, when his first guerrilla book was published. The way things are going in 2026, I think it’s time to revisit his big-picture thinking and formulate some updated tactics for our era and the book business.

For authors, this matters more than ever. We’re competing against algorithmic feeds, bot-inflated metrics, oligarchic monopolies, and the death of organic reach. Yet, as we keep seeing, we have plenty that corporate marketing departments and data centers don’t: authenticity and human-centered creativity, context, relationships and communities, and the ability to think fast and move faster.

Guerrilla marketing isn’t about working harder — it’s about working smarter, showing up where our readers actually are, and creating the experiences and word-of-mouth that spread person to person.
