I like the no-nonsense, deep expertise straight talk of author, sales pro, and coach Steve Chandler. A couple things he wrote in his books have stuck with me for years: 1) Say the things that are true but that others won’t, and 2) Self-employed professionals need to think of going to work like a garbage truck driver…whether you feel like it or not.

Flipping through some of my tabbed pages of his book The Prosperous Coach this week, I came upon his chapter called “Don’t Be a Wallflower: Tell Your Story,” and as with all good business advice, I realized it applied to authors as well. Here are five points I pulled from his chapter.

Prospective customers, clients, and readers want…

1. You to be proud of your books and your author business and be able to easily, enthusiastically, and comfortably discuss your books, programs, services, partnership ideas. These things are marks of a reliable professional.

2. To have enough information about you to go on, to make an informed decision.

3. To feel confident in their decision to work with you, schedule an event with you, buy your books for their store.
