In one variation or another, there’s a secret spark that entrepreneurs of all stripes will point to as a defining point in their business life. It’s when they started taking their business seriously. And when they took their business seriously — It’s a real thing. I’m in it for real. I’m committed to it! — others started taking them seriously too.

That brings me to today’s simple lesson: Expect to get paid, then get paid. Seriously. Serious authors, serious business people, serious adults get paid. Heck, non-serious adults in other fields get paid.

Let’s consider…

  • You are an adult.
  • You are capable. Quite capable.
  • You have real skills. Real in your mind, in your life, in the world, in the marketplace.
  • Paychecks compensate other adults for their skills. You deserve and need to provide yourself a paycheck.
  • Writing and all the attendant capacities of author-hood and an author business are your skills.
  • Being an author is a business.
  • You will get compensated for your skills by working a business model
